Brimbank nominated for two Sustainable Cities 2019 Awards
Brimbank City Council has been nominated as a finalist in two categories in the Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable Cities 2019 Awards.
Council was nominated for Sunvale Community Park and Seedlings for Schools for the Environmental Sustainability Award and the Community Government Partnership Award respectively.
Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council is thrilled to have been nominated for not just one, but two Sustainable Cities Awards.
“This recognition is not just for Council but for all the Brimbank residents who have made these projects a success.
“The nominated projects have had an amazing and lasting impact on the Brimbank community.”
Sunvale Community Park project is a large natural open space with abundant shade, tree planting and open lawns. Playgrounds feature integrated water play, sensory gardens and a skate facility along with BBQ, toilets and outdoor fitness. It also has a stormwater treatment system with underground water storage used for irrigation.
“It’s Council’s most ambitious water recycling project to date in a park setting.
“The other nominated project, the Seedlings for Schools program provides ongoing support to local schools to help them improve their environmental performance and curriculum.
“Growing food in schools helps children connect with where their food comes from and learn life-long skills in composting, caring for plants and creating healthy nutritious meals,” Cr Congreve said.
Two other Brimbank community projects have also been nominated for awards - for the Straws Suck in Sunshine campaign (litter prevention award) and Deer Park North Primary School – our road to sustainability (active schools award).
The Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable City Awards recognise and celebrate positive actions taken by communities in urban areas to protect and enhance their local environments. They encompass initiatives as diverse as litter prevention, recycling, protection of the environment, preserving heritage, community action and leadership and environmental sustainability programs.
Winners will be announced in September at an awards ceremony at Kensington Town Hall.
