Expanded car park relieves parking pressure in St Albans

Summary

An expanded car park on the corner of McIvor Road and Collins Street, St Albans, is now open – offering drivers 49 car parking spaces at no charge.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Margaret Giudice said Council was delighted to open the revamped car park which included an extra 17 car spaces – after Council expanded the previous, smaller McIvor Road car park.

“Council has helped improve parking issues in St Albans by expanding this car park close to the popular Alfrieda Street shopping strip.

“St Albans Town Centre is already a popular shopping destination for locals and visitors – the addition of more car parking spaces will help to enhance this centre.

“This is a great result for shoppers, traders and the St Albans community and another positive step in the ongoing revitalisation of St Albans,” Cr Giudice said.

The car park upgrade and expansion cost $310,000 and includes increased lighting, trees, and two raingardens to trap rubbish and improve the quality of water flowing into waterways. Drivers can enter the car park via McIvor Road and Collins Street.

The expansion was made possible after Council acquired land at 21 McIvor Road, next door to the previous smaller car park, in February 2017.

Council had placed a Public Acquisition Overlay (PAO) on the land in 1989, recognising it was of strategic importance to the town centre.

The public acquisition overlay is part of the Brimbank Planning Scheme and gives Council legal authority to secure properties for a public purpose. The owners of the land were paid compensation as a result of Council’s acquisition of land in accordance with the relevant legislation.
