Get to know your Councillors - Taylors Ward Councillor Georgina Papafotiou
This month we speak to Taylors Ward Councillor Cr Georgina Papfotiou. Cr Papafotiou loves supporting Brimbank’s community to celebrate its many successes. You can contact her on CrPapafotiou@brimbank.vic.gov.au or 0429 727 192.
My keen interest and passion both personally and as a Councillor is being immersed in the community including - with sporting clubs, women in sport, visiting cultural groups or having a cup of coffee with seniors group. I also have a high interest in community safety and supporting victims of violence.
As co-Chair of the Municipal Emergency Management Plan Committee (MEMPC) I work closely with our hard working emergency services representatives and council staff to ensure our municipality is well prepared for any emergencies.
I also serve on a number of other Committees, including the Sydenham Park Master Plan Steering Committee and I co-Chair Brimbank’s Collective Action Committee.
As a member of the Sydenham Park Master Plan Steering Committee, I was thrilled Council recently approved the Draft Sydenham Park Master Plan for community feedback- as it’s our largest open space, a wonderful natural asset and a key destination for our community.
As a huge supporter of our community sporting clubs, I enjoy attending many local games. Sports’ games or events have this amazing ability to bring people together. Recently I attended Football Victoria’s - Senol Gold Medal Night Awards evening and the 2019 NPL Grand Final. Congratulations to NPLW Calder United for winning an extraordinary amount of awards this year. I was honoured to be at these events and very proud to see this Brimbank club be presented with many awards.
Recently I attended the ‘Be Active’ Brimbank launch which encourages community members to be active with a new Physical Activity Guide that helps people find out how they can get moving. Although it was challenging for me, it was a lot of fun!
It is also with great pleasure I visit and support many of our cultural and senior citizen community groups on a regular basis. My aim is to continue to build connections across Brimbank’s diverse community. Recently I attended the Multicultural Concert and the SCATS Seniors Award Ceremony.
As a community member living in Taylors Ward for almost 40 years, I am committed to listening to and working closely with the community. Both my children have grown up and attended kinder, primary and secondary schools in Brimbank, and now they work part-time in Brimbank whilst studying. My family is incredibly proud to be a part of this wonderful community.
For almost 3 years, I along with a fellow Councillor, have made ourselves available to the community on Wednesdays from 9.00 -11.00am during school terms. This is an opportunity to meet with residents or clubs to discuss any ideas, concerns or issues. These sessions have been highly successful! Please contact me for an appointment – we usually meet at the Keilor Community Hub for a cuppa or at a local cafe.
