The next stage of works along Hampshire Road, Sunshine, is set to begin after Council awarded the $1 million plus tender for works to CDN Constructors.
Mayor Cr Margaret Giudice said works would include improvements to the east side of Hampshire Road, from the Man lifting cow statue, to Service Street; and along the South side of Service Street, to Dawson Street.
“Council is excited to move forward with the next stage of improvements to transform the ‘heart’ of Sunshine into an attractive, well-planned space that is easy to negotiate,” Cr Giudice said.
“This stage will focus around the Service Street intersection – including integrating the much-loved Man lifting cow statue into the new civic space.
“Works along Service Street will enhance connections between the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre, the Sunshine Leisure Centre, and the Multi-deck car park.”
Work is expected to begin in early 2018 and finish in mid-2018.
Access to shops will be maintained throughout regular business hours – although some sections of footpath will be temporarily closed off – and there will be some overnight road closures along Hampshire Road.
“While some disruptions will be unavoidable – Council is committed to maintaining access to local businesses throughout business hours,” Cr Giudice said.
“We will work closely with local businesses to ensure minimal disruptions for traders and shoppers alike.”
The works are part of the Hampshire Road Master Plan, which was adopted in 2014 following extensive community consultation.
The plan guides the redevelopment of Hampshire Road into a unique and vibrant destination, where walking, cycling and public transport will be encouraged as main modes of transport.
Council has already completed the works along Hampshire Road, between Devonshire Road and Dickson Street, and in front of the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.
Under the Master Plan, further works are planned along Hampshire Road, between Hertford Road and Ballarat Road; as well as creating a new Civic Green between Devonshire Road and Bennett Place.

This stage of works has been funded in Council’s 2017/2018 Annual Budget.
