Meet the Arts and Culture team
Brimbank’s Arts and Culture team brings creativity to work in spades! Council has a long history of supporting arts and culture activities and the Arts and Culture team are committed to cultural development in Brimbank.
The Arts and Culture team is located in St Albans at the home of the Bowery Theatre and the St Albans Community Centre (STACC).
There’s no shortage of creative aspects to the work generated by this team, and here’s just a snippet of what they do.
The Arts and Culture team is responsible for the vast majority of the public art you see around the streets of Brimbank, which enhance our community and open spaces. They also manage the variety of art spaces and low cost studio spaces available across Brimbank. These offerings provide an opportunity for resident artists to extend and develop their practice in a community setting, and a platform for our residents to engage with artists.
The team also invite artists, curators and groups to submit proposals to exhibit in Council’s exhibition program, particularly encouraging artists from the western region of Melbourne and from diverse cultural backgrounds.
The Arts and Culture team manages the 200-seat Bowery Theatre and the production of a range of quality performances throughout the year including a mix of touring and local shows, as well as screening cult movies on the theatre’s big screen.
At STACC there are a number of programs that engage young people in music, dance and events as well as children in creative play, not to mention the more than fifty community groups that hire rooms at the Centre each week.
They also support the annual Festivals and Events Grants recipients. The grants program delivers activities that bring the community together, enhances community wellbeing, civic pride, builds capacity and showcases the value we place in arts and culture within Brimbank.
The support to community festivals and events producers includes regular training sessions at no charge to those groups and organisations active in Brimbank.
At the moment, the Arts and Culture team is gearing up for the Be Bold Festival, centred around the STACC and Bowery Theatre precinct from 11-19 October. It will feature more than 15 art and fashion events and exhibitions and there’s a really full program with plenty of fun and creative things to do and see.
Underpinning all this work is Council’s Cultural Strategy 2018-2022 which outlines our commitment to cultural vitality in Brimbank.
We’re a vibrant and thriving multicultural community with over 46 per cent of our residents born overseas and more than half speaking a language other than English.
Council values this rich tapestry of people and their unique cultures and inherent creativity - and recognises these qualities make our community so wonderfully diverse.
Not only do cultural and creative activities help us come together to celebrate, reflect, innovate and challenge us, they also build our social cohesion, local economy and pride of place.
