More than 3000 Brimbank locals have signed a community petition calling for the urgent removal of congested and dangerous level crossings on the Ballarat rail line.
The petition calls on the State Government to fast track grade separations at:
The petition was hand-delivered by Brimbank Councillors Cr Sam David JP, Cr Duyen Anh Pham and Cr Kim Thien Truong on behalf of the community to the office of Member for St Albans, Natalie Suleyman on Wednesday 11 September 2018.
Mayor, Cr Margaret Giudice said Council has been advocating for the removal of the three dangerous and congested level crossings on the Ballarat rail line within Brimbank for some time.
“Brimbank Council was happy to support this community petition calling on the State Government to fast-track the removal of three dangerous congested level crossings.
“We’ve already seen how the State Government’s rail crossing removal program can benefit the community and we’d now like this program extended to see the removal of these three level crossings.
“Boom gates are down for 30-40 minutes per hour, during morning peak times creating a traffic choke point. This includes periods of up to nine minutes where multiple trains are going through, including trains stopping at Deer Park, which means barrier gates are down for longer than necessary.
“The roads are so heavily congested in peak periods, that drivers are becoming frustrated and can display erratic driving behaviour. This increases the risks for all road users,” Cr Giudice said.
The petition reads:
The petition of residents of Brimbank draws to the attention of the House the greatly increased numbers of trains and commuter traffic at the Ballarat Rail Line level crossings at Station Road, Deer Park; Robinsons Road, Deer Park; and Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West, which is leading to boom gates being down for much of the morning peak, causing havoc on surrounding roads, and putting the safety of drivers, pedestrians and commuters at risk.
The Petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly of Victoria fast track the removal of these three dangerous congested level crossings.
It is anticipated that Member for St Albans, Natalie Suleyman will present the petition to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria next week.
