Sunshine Super Hub signed and sealed – now let’s deliver!

Super Hub to be part of Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL)

A heads of agreement signed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has cemented Sunshine’s position as the CBD of the West by locking in a Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL) with a stop at Sunshine.

A heads of agreement signed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has cemented Sunshine’s position as the CBD of the West by locking in a Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL) with a stop at Sunshine.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council welcomed the formal agreement which committed the Federal and Victorian governments to having a full business case within a year, and beginning construction within three years.

Cr Congreve called for a collaborative approach to ensure the new Sunshine Super Hub – to be built as part of the MARL and Western Rail Plan – delivers maximum benefits to Brimbank and Melbourne’s West.

“This is an exciting project with enormous potential to deliver jobs, education and positive, transformative change to Brimbank and beyond.

“Brimbank Council is uniquely positioned to contribute to this landmark project that will impact our community for generations to come.

“We look forward to working together with the Federal and Victorian governments to ensure that this project realises its potential to deliver the best outcomes for the community – particularly jobs and education, during and after construction.

“Council is ready and able to contribute to the development of this project from the earliest possible stage – to deliver the best outcomes for the West and to support real engagement with the local community, businesses and key stakeholders,” Cr Congreve said.

Council has previously suggested the Victorian Government consider three steps to help realise this goal:

  1. Identify the Sunshine Precinct as a Victorian Government ‘Priority Precinct’, to ensure efficient and effective planning, consultation and progress, with a focus on jobs, skills, trade, and investment opportunities.
  2. Engage Brimbank Council as a formal partner as part of the Sunshine Super Hub (part of the MARL and Western Rail Plan) Governance Structure – so that Council has a seat at the table to help advise and oversee design, planning and development.
  3. Establish a working group to maximise the project’s business, jobs and community outcomes – both during and after construction.

Brimbank Council has previously welcomed both the Victorian Premier’s $5 billion commitment to the Melbourne Airport Rail Link with a route through Sunshine, and the Federal Government’s $5 billion pledge towards realising the project.

Last month Council met with Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan MP to talk about how we can maximise community benefits – including jobs and education.

Sunshine is a Metropolitan Activity Centre, and part of the Emerging National Employment and Innovation Cluster, designated in Plan Melbourne.
